VINEGAR IS SAFE FOR ALL SURFACES…..RIGHT?
Wrong! Vinegar is great at cleaning a lot of things in your home, safely and effectively. However, there are a few surfaces that should never come in contact with vinegar. Vinegar is actually acidic, which is why it cleans certain things very well. The acidic nature of vinegar can make it too harsh for certain things.
STOP! Vinegar is NOT Safe for Many of Your Home's Surfaces!
Hardwood Floors
Don't ever use vinegar on hardwood floors. It dulls the shine by eating through the finish of the wood. Vinegar will not only leave your floors looking dull, clouded and dirty, but will actually eat through the varnish and damage the wood itself. You're better off using a cleaner especially designed for hardwood floors.
Linoleum
Linoleum floors or "no wax" floors have a shiny coating that keeps them looking great. But guess what? Vinegar removes the coating leaving you with porous, dull floors that stain easily. Again, use a cleaner that is meant for this type of flooring.
Granite Countertops and Stone Tile
You shouldn't clean stone surfaces with vinegar. Stone tile will absorb vinegar and it will eat away at the stone itself, etching and damaging the surface. Granite countertops have a shiny coating that can be removed with vinegar, leaving the granite exposed where it can be etched and damaged by vinegar. Grout is no exception. Vinegar deteriorates grout over time and can leave you with a big problem. Use cleaners that are formulated for cleaning grout, tile and granite.
